2016 Annual Meeting
The Heart Society of Gaston County’s Annual Meeting was held on Tuesday, September 27th at the Gaston Country Club. Dr. Mike Tamberella, an Interventional Cardiologist with CaroMont Heart presented the program on cardiovascular risk factors. Johnathan Lowery, President of the Board of Directors, presented awards to volunteers and businesses that have been very supportive of the Heart Society.
The 18th annual Gold Heart Award was presented to Mr. Steve Huffstetler. This prestigious award recognizes the contributions of individuals who have significantly promoted the mission and the goals of the Heart Society. Steve Huffstetler joined the Heart Society’s Board of Directors in 2003. Over the last 13 years, he has helped fulfill the Heart Society’s mission by generating significant income for the agency and serving in numerous roles on the Board in a leadership capacity. Steve serves on the Heart Ball and Open Heart Open Golf Tournament Committees, and has made presentations to United Way Allocation panels on multiple occasions. In addition to insuring the financial stability of the Heart Society, he has offered his sound judgment and years of experience in the banking industry to make sure the funds raised were managed in the best way to possible to provide the most impact. He has generously given his time to serve two terms as President of the Board, the first term in 2007-2008 and the second one in 2015-2016. His leadership and people skills make him the ideal Chief Volunteer. Steve’s professional career in the banking industry has spanned 37 years. He is currently the Gaston County Market Executive, Senior Vice President for Carolina Trust Bank. Steve is a Gaston County native with deep ties to the Gaston County community. In addition to his volunteerism with the Heart Society, he is currently serving his second term as the Chair of the Gaston County Family YMCA Metro Board and the YMCA Leadership and Fundraising Cabinet for the new Robinwood Lake YMCA. He is a member of the Greater Gaston Development Corporation and Rotary International. He is a member and past Board Member of the Gaston Country Club. He also served as President and Lt. Governor and District Director for Civitan International. Steve and his wife Emily reside in Gastonia. He has 5 children and 2 grandchildren. He is an avid golfer and enjoys working out at the YMCA. Mr. Lowery recognized Dorothy Cherry and Amy Lawing, who co-sponsored the Golden Heart Award in memory of their mother, Eunice Cherry, who was a longtime Heart Society volunteer, and Douglas R. Harris Jewelers for donating the design, labor and fabrication of the award.
The Jennie Craig Watson Award was presented to David Selby. David served as the Chairperson of the Heart Walk for the last 2 years. He does an outstanding job recruiting team captains and walkers, and securing financial support to make the Walk a very successful event. David is the Director of the Cardiovascular Service Line for CaroMont Health.
The WA Anthony Award was presented to Charles and Ann Edwards and Baker Buffalo Creek Vineyard & Winery. In addition to Charles being a past member of the Heart Society’s Board of Directors, he and Ann are major donors for the Live Auction at the Heart Ball, and generous supporters of the Open Heart Open Golf Tournament. They are both very committed to furthering the Heart Society’s mission.
The WL Balthis Award was presented to Johnathan Lowery. This award is presented to an individual who has made a long-lasting impact on the Heart Society. Johnathan has served the Heart Society in numerous leadership roles. He has chaired both the Open Heart Open Golf Tournament and the Heart Ball. Under his leadership, both the participation and funds raised increased significantly for both events. He currently serves as the President of the Heart Society’s Board of Directors.
